A fraction is a number that represents a part or equal parts of a whole. It consists of two parts, numerator and denominator. Numerator being the first part of the fraction is read simply as a number name. Denominator is read as an ordinal number.
If the numerator of a fraction is more than 1, we add ‘s’ after the ordinal name of the number (denominator) refer table 2.
The numerator part of a fraction represents the number of equal sized objects whereas denominator represents the size of each object. Look at the tables given below and practice reading fractions correctly. This will help you understand other operations of fractions easily. In the next lesson, we will understand what does it mean when we represent anything in a fraction.
